Whatever the trail, you will learn what it's like to be a 'distance musher', driving your own team accompanied by one of our expert guides. These wilderness tours vary from 3 to 10 days on the trail and can be customized to suit individual needs and interests.
Description of the tour:
Your first day or two at Muktuk will include training near our ranch and preparation for camping. Our guides will make sure you know how to handle the dogs, the sled and all the gear. They will also make sure that you have all the clothing and camping gear you need for your great expedition. Together you will decide what sort of camping to do: bush camps, 'cold camping' in your sled or camping in heated tents.
Camping Trips on the Yukon Quest Trail
Travel a section of the famous trail of the Yukon Quest International Sled-Dog Race and get a sense
of what Quest mushers experience! You may just discover that magical feeling that gets mushers
hooked on the race.
You'll see what it's like to be a 'distance musher' driving your own dog-team, with one of our expert guides. This tour usually involves 3 to 5 days on the trail, but can be as long as 6 days out and can be modified to suit individual needs.
For one variation you travel along the new Yukon Quest Trail on the Takhini River then on the historic Dawson Trail (an historic wagon trail route from Gold Rush days) to Braeburn, which is an official checkpoint during the Quest. For most of this trek you run the same trail as Quest mushers and camp out on the trail just as the racing mushers do.
After Braeburn you leave the new trail and head to Coghlin Lake which used to be an unofficial stop
on the old Quest Trail. There you can stay in an old cabin or camp on the trail before heading up
Lake Laberge and the Yukon River to the Takhini River and finally back to Muktuk.
Once home you can relax in the sauna and share your tales from the two famous trails over dinner.
On camping trips you have a good chance of seeing the northern lights: Aurora Borealis. There's no experience quite like it!
This picture is of the more common green lights. If you are really lucky you may see red or purple lights as well (there is just a hint of the red developing on the right). Aurora occur most frequently from January to March.

We have rated our trails according to the level of mushing experience and physical fitness
required
Rating Scale:
Experience Level
1. Beginners (no experience required)
2. Intermediate (some experience required)
3. Advanced (higher level of experience required)
Physical Endurance
1. Mostly flat trails, requires low cardio
2. Some hills, requires some reasonable cardio
3. Longer, steeper hills, requires increased cardio
Most trails start from the Muktuk Lodge. We try our best to match the trail to the
capabilities of each musher.
Lake Labarge/ Yukon Quest Trail: (6 days, 5 nights) Experience Level 2, Physical Endurance 3
This trail is approximately 257 km (160 miles) in length. It is comprised of river, lake
and bush trails and well developed sections of the Yukon Quest trail.
2 of 2
Conditions can be variable exposing mushers to a range of situations that help them learn
good dog care skills.
37 Mile Trail: (4 days, 3 nights) Experience Level 3, Physical Endurance 3
This trail travels over rivers and lakes. There is a bush trail that is an old trapping trail
which is cut fairly narrow with tight corners and some decent hills. Mushers have to
work the sled. This is a very scenic trip with lots of good stories at the end.
It is also possible to incorporate this trip into the Lake Labarge option, which results in a
6 day/7 night trip.
Livingston Trail: (4 to 5 days) Experience Level 2, Physical Endurance 3
This trip travels the Tankini and Yukon rivers before connecting with the historic
Livingston Trail. Once on the Livingston Trail the terrain is mainly rolling hills that
require additional effort from the musher to support the dogs.
Fish Lake Trail: (5 days, 4 nights) Experience Level 3, Physical Endurance 3
This trail starts at Fish Lake, about 40 km (25 miles) from the Muktuk Lodge.
The trail travels along Fish Lake and then ascends to alpine-type terrain. Snow conditions
can be variable and winds can often be a factor. This trail is not for beginners but is
reasonably challenging for those who have acquired some experience. It is very scenic
with good opportunities to see wildlife.
