Mushing Day-Trips

Muktuk offers three options for day-trips, all featuring an introduction to sled-dogs in the Yukon.

Dawson Trail Day-Trip, our most popular option, is a 6-hour adventure. Takhini Express is our shortest trip, running about 60 to 90 minutes. When you arrive, you'll meet our very friendly huskies. You may get a chance to visit our Quest dogs, or see them take off on a run. Then you have an orientation to the dogs, equipment and art of driving a dog team.

One of our guides will accompany you on your run, to give you training, support and assistance in driving the team. You can learn how to harness and "bootie" your team, how to brake, how to balance and steer the sled, and other basics of driving a sled-dog team.

Our dogs are very powerful – probably the strongest dogs in the Quest pound for pound – and you will get to see and feel that power in action as you head out on your introductory run. Your daytrip will take you along the Takhini River to the historic Dawson Trail, and a variety of trails close to the ranch. The area is very beautiful – secluded and silent – and the river trails follow part of the actual Yukon Quest trail.

These trips are available from mid-November to the end of March, subject to weather and trail conditions.

Special Introduction to Mushing

For guests who want a more intensive introduction to the sport of mushing, Muktuk offers a special full-day Introduction to Mushing. Participants arrive at 9:30 in the morning, join in morning preparations, then follow the regular day-trip schedule. After, participants can help with evening feeding, then learn about the history of our dogs and the Yukon Quest. The day ends with a hearty home-cooked dinner. Guests return to their hotel by 9:30pm. This option must be booked at least 10 days in advance.
