YUKON QUEST START FAIRBANKS ALASKA
Frank's team first steps on the Quest trail

The crew lays out the gangline before hooking up the team. All 24 teams are parked in a large parking lot, arranged according to their starting order. Race volunteers help get each team out of the parking area and down too the start chute. It is a precisely time and well-organized process – it’s hard to imagine a parking lot with 24 sleds and over 330 dogs! Snowmachines anchor each team until they are at the chute – essential given the power of these teams.

Some of our puppies are wondering what they are getting into! Beside them you can see part of the truck that Norcan Leasing loaned us to get to the race. Without that truck, Frank would not be on the trail right now.

Frank drew bib number 15.
Frank concentrates on his gear before the start.

Large crowds showed up for the start of the race this year – the 25th running of the race. The start chute is just under the Cushman Street Bridge, and people line the bridge, the chute and both banks of the river.

The Muktuk volunteer start crew help Frank guide the team to the start chute. You can’t see them too well, as they are in a cloud of ice fog from human and canine breath! The crew members are: Manuela, Ike, Uta, Daniel, Jewel, Angela and Janet – great team and great team spirit!

Frank is happy to get on the trail at last.
Frank waves to the crowd and greets many familiar faces as he starts down the trail. He won’t see that many people again for a long time…
