Our 2008 Quest Team

Frank training January 2008 on the Quest trail (click on for more)

Every year, Frank trains approximately 24 dogs, with the goal of putting together a team of 14 dogs that work well together. Ideally, you should not be able to answer the question, "who is your best dog?" since that should be too close to call...

We welcome sponsors for our team. These sponsorships enable us to provide the dogs with better food and harnesses. To sponsor, email us at muktuk@northwestel.net

d Livingston - 9 years, 65 pounds, 3 Quests

The oldest and most experienced dog in our team, Livingston is running his 6th Quest. He is a very humble and unassuming nature. He is a very steady leader who does well in tougher trail conditions.

d Elsa - 6 years, 45 pounds, 1 Quest
One of our smallest dogs, Elsa has a “big” attitude. Although she weighs only around 45 pounds, her enthusiasm rols through the team (and into the musher!). Elsa is one of our rescue dogs, and the only dog not bred and raised in our kennel. She will probably be one of the starting leaders. She can be very stubborn at times, creating a mini-battle of wills. She is a favourite of Fabienne and Saul (and Anne).

d Carter - 5 years, 65 pounds 1 Quest
Laste year, Carter was probably my most consistent leader. A torn shoulder ligament forced him out of the race. When he is at 100%, he’s great, and he will see his share of lead this year for sure.

d Sakura - 5 years, 50 pounds, 1 Quest

Sakura is a great little leader, although still a bit tentative at time. Saul found her to be a great dog in the Copper Basin. She is renowned for jumping over the gangline while waiting to hit the trail -- no one has a vertical leap like Sakura!

d

Val is miss steadiness. She is not big in stature, but she is large in heart. You really have to make sure she always runs in booties. While she will run on lead when required, she is best suited to the mid-team. I usually run her with her brother, Mischief.

d Mischief - 6 years, 64 pounds 1 Quest
Mischief comes by his name honestly. He likes people better than other male dogs, and he’s the only member of the team who occasionally has inter-personal issues with other males. We have come to a rather clear understanding of what behaviour is not acceptable, and it seems to work. A hard-working dog, he thrives on affection and will run on lead when necessary. He’s another one of my favourites.

A brother to Val and Mischief, Falcon is the biggest dog in the team, weighing in at over 70 pounds. A very easy-going dog, he will run on lead, but probably prefers to be in the middle of the team. He never complains and has a good sense of humour.Sponsored by:

d Banshee - 4 years, 61 pounds, 1 Quest

If this was a beauty contest, Banshee would win hands down. A super leader, he sometimes works too hard. On lead, Banshee sets a super pace. He works really well with Elsa and Sakura in particular. Never, ever does Banshee get grumpy. And when the going gets tough, the tough get going – that is our Banshee.

OUR ROOKIES YUKON QUEST DOGS

d Tarragon - 2 years, 56 pounds, Rookie
D

Along with his brother, Basil, Tarragon is one of the best natural trotters on the team. (A trotting gait is preferred to loping on long-distance runs.) A very quiet and shy dog, he is totally committed to me. He has really matured during training an

d Basil - 2 years, 59 pounds Rookie

More outgoing than Tarragon, Basil gets very excited at the start of each run. Like his brother, he is very handsome. Sometimes he can be a picky eater, but hopefully we have enough culinary variety to keep his interest.

Stanley’s Sons (1½)
The next four rookies are all sons of Stanley. We usually do not start dogs in the Quest until they are at least two, but these pups have demonstrated that they truly belong. Their mother is Glacier, and they are all named after glaciers around the world. I’m so proud of all the young guys – they are the future.

d Yahtsee - 2 years, 54 pounds Rookie

In many ways, Yahtse is a carbon coyp of Tasman. He is a very happy dog who brings a lot of physical strength to the team. He and his brother will be key to getting over the summits we climb.

d Khumbu- 2 years, 54 pounds Rookie

This handsome young fellow is a clone of his father, Stanley. He sets the tone for the team, both physically and mentally.

d Nisqualy - 2 years, 58 pounds, Rookie

Super enthusiastic, he will be a strong leader one day. He is a good trotter and turning out to be very dependable. He also has a great attitude.

d Tasman -2 years, 54 pounds Rookie

Like his brother, he is always ready to go. HE prefers loping to trotting, but with the longer distances of the Quest, I think he will discover a trotting gait. He is always happy.

ON THE BENCH FOR THIS SEASONT
This year will stand out for me, in that Stanley, Shilo, Sprocket and Beethoven will all be staying home for the first time in many years. They are great dogs, but just did not make the final team, and it’s a bit hard to imagine heading out without them.
dStanley - 8 years, 65 pounds 1 Quest

Stanley is a fine leader and has shown that he can handle really tough, poorly marked trail conditions.

dShilo - 9 years, 49 pounds, 2 Quest

The smallest member of our team, Shilo is a sweet, gentle girl. But she's also a focussed and strong leader. More than once, she has pulled bigger stronger males onto the right trail, and she won't take any nonsense from the boys. While 2004 was her first Quest, she performed like a real professional.

dSprocket - 5 years, 50 pounds, 1 Quest
D Sprocket is a very happy little leader, who just loves getting out there. She had surgery to remove part of her jaw, but the only problematic result has been that she is a slow eater. And she still loves to run!

d Beethoven - 5 years, 64 pounds, Rookie

Beethoven is Schubert's brother, and also runs on lead. He is a really good trotter with a super attitude. This is the first Quest for both these boys.

d Marley - 2 years, 53 pounds, Rookie
d

Marley is one of Spooky's "ghost puppies" that many of you may remember. She is goofy (still a puppy), but very friendly and personable. She loves people and is very demonstrative with everyone.
