Rookie Ranch

Our Rookie Ranch is modelled on the well-known western concept of a "Dude Ranch," for novice horse riders (made famous by the movie City Slickers). So, even if you have never set foot on a dog-sled-runner before, and even if you are a true "city slicker" when it comes to dog mushing, you will be driving your own team before you leave Muktuk.

Our guests experience all aspects of the amazing winter sport of dog-sledding:

  • handle a dog-sled & motivate a dogsled team,
  • care for and drive a team of sled-dogs, &
  • harness and "bootie" dogs.

Rookies begin by going out in a sled with a guide, but can soon drive a dog team on their own.

By the 3rd or 4th day, many are ready to try an overnight camping trip (but camping is optional).

  • Some dogs are Yukon Quest veterans, others are race hopefuls in their 1st or 2nd year of training. At day's end, Rookies can help with evening feeding and share trail stories over a fine dinner.

Out on the trail, we have luxurious Snowtrekker tents, complete with a small stove, or you can rough it and try "cold camping" on your sled, just like Yukon Quest mushers!

Everyone makes many new friends in the yard and on the trail. Here a Rooky gets to know Murphy, fondly know a Hoop Boy, for his famous high-jumping stunts.

Frank Turner has mushed in the Yukon for 3 decades. He is the only musher to enter the Yukon Quest 23 times. Every winter, Frank shares his mushing life and his love of dogs with guests who want to learn about dog-sledding. .

At Muktuk, we specialize is small group adventures, for both novice and experienced mushers. Rookie Ranch is our most popular introductory program, but we offer many other options and try to customize each package to suit the participants.
