History

Muktuk Adventures has a history which is deeply rooted in the heritage of the Yukon. Its story began when Frank Turner first settled in the Yukon in the early 1970s. Frank’s Yukon Adventure started after losing the toss of a coin. Frank’s education background in community social work had him settle in the small First Nation community of Pelly Crossing; He had one dog at that time. It did not take long to get as second dog, then a third unwanted one, that turned out to be pregnant. That is how Frank ended up with his first dog team. From using his dog to haul wood and water to his cabin in the bush to running small sprint races, Frank embraced this lifestyle and found a real passion.

In 1984 he participated in the first Yukon Quest 1000mile sled dog race. Over the years he earned the nickname “Grandma of the trail” as competitors felt like he did not push his dogs to their full potential. Frank stayed true to his “soft” practises, applying his background in social work to his dog yard. He was rewarded in 1995 to win the Yukon Quest and he held the record time for 10 years. In total he participated in the Yukon Quest from is inaugural race in 1984 to 2008, with the expectation on 2006 when his son races. He finished … races, …. in the top then.

Manuela joined Muktuk Adventures in the spring of 2007 with a work and holiday visa. Her initial plan was to spend 2 months in the Yukon. She instantly fell in love with the dogs and the lifestyle and listening to Frank talking about the training and the adventures on the trail with the dogs in the winter made her change her mind. Being a carpenter was certainly a big advantage for her to extend her visa. Fast forward to the present day and Manuela is still in the Yukon and at Muktuk Adventures. Together with her husband she took over the operation.

With a diverse range of winter activities well established and renowned around the world, Muktuk Adventures commenced summer tours in 2015. With a wealth of wilderness trails as well as the Takhini and Yukon Rivers at its doorstep, hiking, canoeing, and camping activities have been embraced into the Muktuk eco-tourism way of life.

Muktuk has always been about dogs and the relationships they have with those who come to stay. Whether it be out in front of a dog sled, pulling through a freshly dusted forest trail, riding as lead scout during a pristine paddle down one of the magnificent waterways, or seeking out a cuddle at the beginning or end of the day, dogs have been at the centre of Muktuk Adventure’s history. Some of the dogs have become household names around the world, as guests have developed affinities for the amazing four-legged team they have admired and respected while out on trails or paddling around bends.

All who work at Muktuk take great pride in the commitment to environmental sustainability and cultural preservation. The business strives to minimize its ecological footprint by promoting responsible practices, aimed at ensuring the preservation of the Yukon’s untouched wilderness.
With a proud history, and an exciting future, Muktuk Adventures stands as testament to the spirit of adventure, the power of nature, and an extraordinary bond between humans and dogs.
